Who says carpooling has to be a local initiative? Delhi-based husband and wife team, Vinay and Sujata Arora have launched an all-India online carpool initiative on www.poolmycar.in. They call it “corporate carpooling”.

Vinay Arora was tired of the congestion on the roads of his city. “I spoke to people about why the government isn’t doing anything about the traffic and realised that the government is trying, by making flyovers,” he said. “But you can’t level all of Delhi into a travel ground.” The solution is, of course, to reduce the number of cars on the road. But public transport isn’t something citizens have much influence over. So Vinay and Sujata hit upon the idea of finding carpooling partners online. “If people can find a life partner online, finding a travel partner shouldn’t be difficult.”

Naturally, this wasn’t easy. For starters, people worry about how safe it is to share your car with a stranger. Then, in a city like Delhi, two people could travel from Gurgaon to south Delhi every day and not be travelling to quite the same destination. This is the reason why the website offers personalised solutions to its members’ travel plans. (Sujata is  managing  the site, respond to queries and monitor the website’s live chat.) It has also tied up with companies, so that there is now intra-office carpooling.

Unfortunately, as clever and environmentally friendly as the idea is, it is not financially sustainable yet. “Luckily, we have business and land in Punjab and make money from farming,” Vinay admitted. “This is our way to do something good and it’s only possible because we have money.” Do your bit by giving it a shot. Is carpooling good? 

Its very nice to writesomething about carpooling. This concept is getting popular day by dayas it has become need of hour for all of us to share car / van / Taxi / Auto or any four wheeler journey to meet the rising fuel price, traffic congestions and air pollution. 
No doubt , Govt of all countries  is working very hard to fight againsttraffic problem by  widening roads and making flyovers but the mostimportant two facts which we all need to understand are:- First,  thereis a limit to widening Roads and making flyovers and thereafter wecannot widen roads or make flyovers. Second , there is no limit toincreasing vehicles. Delhi is getting roughly 1000 new four wheelers onroad everyday and this number will increase once low cost carslike Tata Nano are introduced to the market. Can we imagine traffic onroads after 1 year?  Normallyvehicle's have fuel efficiency of 10 KM/L. If a vehicle runs 20,000km/year , this means ,  it will consume 2000 L fuel in one year. Burning 1 L of petrol emits 2.5 kg of carbon dioxide. Thus the vehiclewill emit about 5000 kg of CO2 in one year. An average mature tree canabsorb about 4.5-5 kg carbon dioxide per year. Thus we need about 1000mature trees to absorb the pollution (carbon dioxide) emitted by onecar. If a single car is pooled, this could reduce four cars from theroad which is equal to growing more than 4000 trees   
We all doexpect a lot from government in terms of reducing traffic and dosomething for reducing pollutions too but the question arises that dowe understand our responsibilities? While driving to office in themorning, if you have look on all car's near by your car's, you willfind that each car is carrying only one passenger. If these all peopleunderstand concept of carpooling, this number of cars can be reduced toone fifth as each one which was carrying one passenger, will becarrying 5 passengers. I asked few people if given a chance, will theyrefer carpooling? I got different answers. Some people said they willdefinitely like this option. Some people said they will definitelywelcome this concept but with some terms and conditions like who willtake responsibility of security? Some people said they need a goodresource to find a right person to pool with. Some people were justwilling to pool with people of there own organization. Corporate carpooling site PoolMyCar.in,which claims to have more than 15,000 registered users, has introduced‘live chat' service on its website to help users find the right personwhom they can pool with.

According to PoolMyCar.in, its users need to provide theirindividual and company details to become members of the site and startusing its services, however most people who are not very internet savvydo face some difficulty in registering, creating and finding carpools.The live chat service is aimed at helping all such users who can chatwith a PMC (PoolMyCar) support guy.

1 - Share yourtrip with the right people. It could be possible to car-share with people fromyour entourage (school, company).
